A historian specializing in the history of World War II, with particular emphasis on Gdańsk Pomerania and the Vilnius Region. She conducts primary research in German and Lithuanian archives and conducts commissioned archival research on the history of the war and the biographies of prominent figures in Polish culture. She was a scholarship holder at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz (1999–2000). She holds a PhD in Humanities (2008) and a postdoctoral degree (habilitation) from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. She is the author of numerous books, scholarly and popular science articles, and encyclopedia entries published in Poland, Germany, Lithuania, and the USA. She collaborates with organizations including the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
